bSang Offering Incense - Shrimala
bSang (བསང་) is an ancient and powerful ritual practised across the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau for dispelling illness, removing obstacles, accruing merit, and repaying karmic debts. Dedicated as a fragrant smoke offering to the enlightened beings, Dharma protectors, provocative spirits, and all sentient beings, bSang is an excellent example of incense’s use as a potent ritual substance.
The most famous bSang practice in the Himalayas today is called Riwo Sangchöd (རི་བོ་བསང་མཆོད།), or the “Mountain Smoke Offering.” Reaching far beyond the realm of mundane ritual magic, this terma text is considered to be a secret instruction on the most profound teachings of the Great Perfection (རྫོགས་པ་ཆེན་པོ།), connecting it with the highest philosophical teachings of Tibetan Buddhism’s ancient translation school.
Despite its strong Buddhist associations, bSang has roots in early indigenous Tibetan and Himalayan societies. It features heavily in the epic myth of Gesar of Ling, where it’s used as an important means of communication with beings of the unseen dimensions.
Shrīmālā’s bSang Offering (བསང་མཆོད།) incense sticks are highly unique, based on our ever-expanding collection of wildcrafted Himalayan bSang blends, with the addition of ethically-sourced aromatic offering substances from England, the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Himalayas. Each batch contains “fresh” gold and silver powder from our jewellery workshop, and is prepared with frankincense (སྤོས་དཀར་) and other sacred resins, consecrated saffron water, and an array of sacred substances.
These convenient incense sticks are suitable for most bSang practices, including Riwo Sangchöd, but should not be used for Nāga Puja or Kriyatantra offerings.
